Successful world premier of the new powertrainhone machine generation

EMO-Results: Inquiries beat all records

The EMO 2007 will go down in the record books as the most successful expo in Gehring’s nearly 80 year company history. "Our machines have never stirred up such a large and concrete interest as in Hannover", reports Dorothee Stein-Gehring, Managing Director of the world market leader for honing machines. From the beginning, it was clear that the brand new machine generation called the powertrainhone would be an expo highlight. But still the inquiries by the industry visitors to the world’s largest expo for machining technology exceeded all expectations. "In the coming months we will have our hands full responding to the requests and preparing tailor-made proposal packets", says Gehring Marketing Leader Sebastiano Caruana. With the powertrainhone Gehring presented the most modern technology in honing machines at the EMO, a generation ahead of the worldwide competition.

General Motors issues an order worth millions

This year’s machine tool expo has already shown to be promising for Gehring. During the expo, the world’s largest automobile company, General Motors signed a contract worth millions for the conversion of hone machines. For many years there has been a trusting partnership with the automobile company; GM was also the first automobile manufacturer in the world to implement the Gehring patented laser honing process.

Economically fast: 30 Percent shorter cycle times with powertrainhone

powertrainhone is a new machine generation with a unique modular concept. The innovative modular design system is comprised of standardized functional components which can be combined with tailor-made honing centers. This groundbreaking configuration enables new freedom and flexibility in production. In combination with the new more powerful drives, new benchmarks for machine output and economy are set. Compared to modern hone systems with a conventional layout, cycle times can be reduced by up to 30 percent.

The powertrainhone is tailored to the machining of cylinder blocks in the automobile industry. With a stroke of between 500 and 1000 millimeters, cylinder bores with diameters from 68 to 125 millimeters can be machined. powertrainhone can be integrated smoothly into the production of both in-line and V motors.

lifehone introduces the modular machine concept

powertrainhone is the continuation of the modular design system that Gehring introduced with the lifehone–product line. lifehone is used for honing bores up to 150 millimeters long and introduced the fast linear drive into Gehring honing machines. An additional technical feature of the lifehone 250: the spindle does not move, the part moves vertically.

Gehring: Innovative Partner of the Automobile Industry

Gehring Hones are used worldwide primarily in the production of automobile engines. With the machining via honing, the friction between the piston and cylinder is reduced significantly lessening wear and consumption. Gehring has a patent on so-called laser honing, which further reduces the pollutant emissions in laser honed motors. A laser beam profiles the cylinder wall and makes precision oil pockets. This minimizes friction losses, as well as penetration of motor oil in the combustion chamber.
